Change Of Season. Change Of Heart

The many merits of a fall getaway to Tuscany

Summer 2022 saw exceptionally scorching heat, record levels of drought and a tourism season that surpassed pre-pandemic levels. If you didn’t make it to Italy yet, I wouldn’t let the shorter daylight hours and fresher temperatures be a deterrent from venturing to the bel paese now. In fact, while everyone is assuming regular routines with the arrival of fall, this is actually the ideal time to embrace a magical moment in Italy. Enjoy a more relaxed pace away from the crowds and stifling heat and indulge in an Italian life experience with locals who have returned refreshed from their August ferie. In addition, witnessing the colours of fall and the season’s natural rhythm will feed the soul—and, of course, your appetite. From the first-press olive oil to tasting a treasure trove of fine wines, this is a time to savour the bounty of Italy’s many gastronomical offerings in a more tranquil, idyllic setting that truly replenishes and recharges mind, body and soul.

Savour the season at destination winery, MonteRosola in the Volterra region. Organic olives are hand-picked and cold-pressed at a mill in nearby Volterra.

I had no idea of the beauty this change of season brings. As a huge fan of all things summer, I tend to travel to Italy in early September around Labour Day, as this somewhat extends the summer, giving me the chance to make the most of a Canadian one. There is also the added benefit of sneaking in some late-season beach time, which to some degree eases the ultimate acceptance of the colder days ahead upon my return.

Up until last year, I had never missed a Thanksgiving celebration with my family. When the opportunity to spend that particular weekend in the charming Tuscan countryside with a group of international journalists on a press tour presented itself, I didn’t hesitate to break with tradition.

Nor should you.

In the next blog post, I share my exceptional five-star experience in the exquisite Tuscan countryside on a weekend that is usually reserved for turkey and pumpkin pie. This change of season definitely brought on a change of heart as I discovered (to my surprise) that October in Italy is my new favourite time of year to visit the country I usually reserved for a late summer holiday.

With the cooler, crisper days upon us, whether you’re taking in the spectacular foliage in Canada or meandering from one Italian winery to another, here’s to celebrating a fabulous fall wherever you are.

Close the door to summer and open a window to Tuscany in the fall. The art of Chianti living awaits.
